John has over 35 years mining industry experience as a General Manager, Mine Manager, Inspector of Mines, Undermanager, Deputy and Underground Miner.

He has assisted the Queensland Mining Warden as a Reviewer, in 20 Fatal and 3 Serious Injury Accident Inquiries into the nature and cause of these events.

John’s qualifications include:

  • Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training,

  • MNCU1109.A Manage, Operate and Maintain the Mine Ventilation System
  • Sociology of Disasters course with Australian National University.

The above formal qualifications are reinforced by hands on experiences with serious mine fires, spontaneous combustion events, gas outbursts, extensive roof falls and a mine explosion delivers credibility and as a result John is in great demand as a facilitator for safety, statutory and risk management issues.

Relevant and complementary skills and accomplishments:

  • Completed numerous Operations Management and Safety Management Systems Training Programs in Australia and the United States
  • Been selected as a member of Review Panels assisting the Qld Mining Warden and Coroner, Mr. F.W. Windridge on 20 fatal and 3 Serious Accident Inquiries.
  • Project Manager for a successful ACARP Project titled "Sealing, Monitoring and Low Flow Inertisation of a Goaf". This Project was awarded the Australian Coal Industry 1998 Excellence in Research Award for underground mine Safety.
  • Assisted Cook Colliery to win the Minister's Training Initiative Award for Excellence in the development and implementation of Hazard Management Plans (Sept. 1998)
  • Prepared and presented papers for the Training of Mine Officials and is a tutor and mentor for candidates seeking Statutory Qualifications
  • Active and Proficient member of Mines Rescue Service for approximately 12 years and District Assessor for both State and Australian Rescue Competitions for three (3) years
